Performance

Basic Performance

The Ventura sit-on-top model (13 feet WL x 35 inch beam) cruises comfortably at 3.5 knots (4.0 mph). At this speed, the pedalling cadence is a very comfortable 60-70 cycles per minute. The effort is comparable to walking...perhaps easier. Your leg joints do not have to support your body weight. The sit-on-top hull exhibits high stability and all around practicality.

Roughly speaking, the tailboat produces about twice the thrust of a conventional paddler. Range and endurance far exceeds that of a conventional paddler in the same hull.

Longer, narrower hulls will go faster. Shorter, wider hulls will go slower. If you'd like to turn your outrigger canoe, catamaran or fishing boat into a tailboat, you can purchase just the propulsion system to install yourself.

Handling & Maneuverability

The tailboat's high maneuverability makes it a lot of fun to use. Gliding through turns is graceful and practically effortless. No maneuvers require the use of a paddle.

Pedal forces are lively and fluid. Alternating pedal strokes generate alternating swimming strokes. As every swimmer develops their own stroke or style, every tailboater does the same.

Operating a tailboat shares many similarities with piloting an airplane....and none of the risks.

Reverse Thrust

The tailboat generates forward AND reverse thrust. If you find yourself in a tight spot, simply throw it into reverse and back out. Other fin propulsion systems require you keep a conventional paddle at the ready for maneuvering in tight spots or backing up. Reverse thrust greatly expands the boats performance envelope and ease-of-use.

Would you ever buy a car without reverse gear?

Comfort

The reclining, or "recumbent", seat provides unequalled comfort and back support. It's great to watch the scenery pass by without the ever-present distraction of a hand-held paddle. The recumbent position is easier on the body than upright conventional paddling. The tailboat uses your leg muscles and joints which are better suited for strength and endurance than your arms.

Physical Fitness

The tailboat provides a safe, low-impact workout, suitable for any age and fitness level. What could be more enjoyable than working out while cruising in total comfort along a serene lakeshore? It's easy on the back, easy on the joints and easy on the bottom.

An upper body workout can be achieved by connecting optional D-ring cables to each foot pedal.
